I was listening to your show today and I have an idea for a plan to save not only GM but all 3 companies even though Ford is not seeking help at this time it still could help their position. I DO NOT believe in nationalizing these companies. Volkswagen survived despite Adolph Hitler not because of him! I believe the government should be more of a mediator encouraging the oil companies to use their profits to loan the car companies the resources they need to stay afloat. Then the car companies build what you talked about; basic, affordable, efficient transportation (or a modern version of the Ford Falcon idea). Allow the oil companies tax breaks for loaning the money, allow the car companies tax deductions for the interest on the loans and then allow the tax payers deductions for the full price of the cars. The government should play the roles of catalyst and mediator not overseer. To keep government spending lower and stimulate the economy, the government should purchase these cars for government use as well.
Great idea Stoney. We must remember what VW did after the war; they sent the ‘bug’ over here. It took off big time after a few years and it was good on gas, wasn’t very pretty, but yet very affordable.. .. .I also agree with the car guy about a $10K car…Hey, it can even look like the infamous VW ‘Thing’; remember them?.. . .. .. Can you imagine an Impala which looks more like a Hummer, in cosmetics, but less than $10K dollars?. .. .. . Would get 35 mpg on a 200hp engine and room for 5?. .. . .. ..I would buy it…….. .. .To reduce their debt, all new cars should be sold by the companies at or below cost and pay their salesmen a standard fee. They should reduce inventory and take the Ch 11 and re-negotiate labor contracts.
Right, Robby and Stoney, what is needed is a modern, but very basic, Chevrolet Chevy II, Ford Falcon,and Dodge Dart for $10,000.
All of these car companies made money when they were building cars for the common man with a maximum of interchangeable parts. The Chevy II, for instance, could come with any motor from a 153 C.I. 4 cyl., thru any of 3 in-line 6′s, to any of 3 V8′s up to 327 C.I., and used many of the exact same parts as several other models Chevy built at that time.
Tho’ all of these cars were fairly efficient, they could now be made much lighter, greener and more durable than the originals, for less capital investment in comparable dollars than spent in 1962.
Being raised on a farm, having a 157 IQ, and being a mechanical engineer, qualified to do nearly anything with almost nothing, I am one of those managers who could make this happen, but I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the call. They will not even fire the nitwits that got them into this mess, so I guess they feel no changes are needed, just more and more of your money and mine!
….HOW TO SAVE GM: 1). There’s an old saying in the car business: “ Nothing happens until you sell something”. We need to sell something(s)….The Government can pour billions of dollars into these companies, but unless consumers have the confidence, desire, cash and credit to buy, those billions will pour through the auto manufactures like water in a sieve. 2). The dealers need immediate help in floorplan credit lines. Without these, they cannot continue to hold inventories. 3). The government needs to provide a cash bonus…a large one that is immediate…not a tax deduction….that will encourage people to buy NOW! 4). Reenacting the 10% investment tax credit will encourage businesses to lease new fleets. 5). Americans need and want a reasonably priced quality vehicle…BUILT IN THE USA….that uses an eco-friendly restorable fuel source..electric, hydrogen, nuclear..Whatever can be available ASAP…Probably 18-24 months from drawing board to the showroom…6.) President Obama’s team needs some automotive experts on the crisis recovery team..(I have 58 years on all sides of the industry and am willing to serve…and I don’t “cost 10 million a year” …There is a desperate need for knowledgeable experts…not academia nor bean counters..Those are the ones who caused this mess!…7.) MOST IMPORTANT…..The American people cannot afford to have GM/Chrysler/Ford fail…If GM or Ford were to fail, suppliers will fail. If suppliers fail..Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsu…all makes manufacturing in the US will fail..and we will have unemployment of one out of seven workers in America..and chaos will follow…A financial calamity that nothing can fix (except the Lord….{Obey the Lord and leave all the consequences to Him…Charles Stanley}…8. Cut labor and other costs as much as possible.
Suspend whatever % of payments to X employees they can’t afford (or go belly up!) until profits are attained, and then honor contracts as much as possible.
Give the NAW (?) Labor Union notice that until GM makes a profit for 5 straight years, they are banned from operating on GM property. After the 5 prof (pick a number of yrs) GM will consider via talks w. the labor union officials, letting them back into their plants.
Give workers notice that they have 90 days to drop their union membership or be terminated.
Cut the current fleet by X% to eliminate dead weight. What’s not selling. Bottom 5-10 cars are gone.
Focus on what sells. What people like. Like SUV’s and Pick Up Trucks. Make the best SUV’s in the world with the best fuel mileage.
Continue research down the Flex Fuel path. We need trucks and SUV’s that get 25 MPG city, and 32 on the highway. Figure it out!
Open plants in expanding markets, like India (our allies). No plants in aggressive countries, we don’t want to give them the tech to build the implements of war.
Cut costs now! Everything that has to be cut, get rid of it. Insurance, benefits, bonuses, whatever.
Put a man in charge who’s willing to make the hard choices and let him assemble a team who’ll do the same.
Continue to pressure the government to reduce regulations and agency controls over the auto industry. To compete globally we have to create an atmosphere here as close to what our competitors are working in abroad.
Lobby congress to implement tariffs on all imports, to protect our auto industry and use the money to fund loans to the auto industry and to make grants to develop new technology -fuel efficiency etc.-
Gasoline/Electric!! 60-80 hp with no mechanical drive-train. No frills with the exception of lights, wipers, radio, and AC. Steering would be electric, brakes would be electric. Body would be chosen out of the past and manufactured with old tooling pulled from the cobwebs………but material would be aluminum. Frame would be high strength aluminum. Wheels would be 14″ and aluminum. The smoothness of ride would not be determined by a heavy body, but by lighter unsprung weight. Two of my favorite bodies are the Henry J and the English Ford Anglia.
hello there,well first I saw you on fox news which I hardly watch,but you did say some thing very true that the car makers for got along time ago.
first I bought a new car about 6 years ago since I saw the high gas prices coming and I new that the economy was going to get bad,so I bought an a cheaper priced car with good gas mileage but it was not from a US car maker.the car when all said and done cost under 12,000 and the car is great for me lasting ok and I will drive it till the wheels fall off.
so what you said the US car makers are not making a inexpensive car that I can afford give me a car around 12,000 and I will buy it but they seem to forget that most people cannot afford to buy those big expensive cars,well some of us here don’t like to spend that amount of money on a car I don’t so give me a US car that I like that I can afford and I will buy it till then I will buy the one I can afford and that right now comes from across the big pond and yes just a down home person that has to take care of a family and just need some thing to get me from point a to point B.
so let them know if they build it will be bought all of them need to make a car that the person that makes less then 30,000 can afford to buy and buy a car that is priced at 15,000 to what ever is not some thing we want to pay so tell them to get it right.
