How Are You Robbing Others By Not Asking For Help?

Ever thought how cool it was that Jesus ask the woman at the well for a drink. It’s hard to ask for help, “pride”. How cool to give Jesus a drink!

jeep20jamboree20023In 1996 I was standing at the back of my Jeep when I herd the crackling noise of tires on gravel behind me. By the time I turned to see, it was too late the Jeep behind mine had rolled down the hill crushing me. I got my right leg up on my bumper but my left leg didn’t make it. The driver behind me was running as he tried in vain to stop his unoccupied Jeep he had failed to put in gear or set the brake. Others came from everywhere to pull the Jeep off me, but too late to save my leg. With the Jeep pulled back I slumped to the ground, little did I know, that would be the last time I would stand on my own for a couple of years.

God, with the help of a Navy Surgeon that, “just happened to be in Murphy, N.C.” saved my leg. With my leg’s condition, both bone and skin damage, the doctors decided to confine me to a wheel chair. Now in a wheel chair with no family in the area, my wife barely 5 feet tall and me 6’5” and 240lbs, couldn’t get me up stairs. This was a real issue, we had a three story house with the living area on the second floor. Once a team from our Sunday school class and my wife finally got me upstairs I was, pretty much, confined to my second floor.

wheel-chair-rampOnce again the next Saturday, God was showing me how His loves works within the body of Christ.  Seven or eight guys from our same Sunday School class arrived at our house, loaded with wood, nails and tools enough to build a wheel chair ramp that went about 80 feet from the deck we had on the back of our house clear to the street. I was a baby Christian at the time and had never really lifted a hand to help anyone in such a way; the thought would have never even crossed my mind. Mike Ham, the teacher, was standing at the back door and I rolled over and ask him, what, had I ever done to deserve such kindness. Mike told me something I will never forget.

He said, “Robby, you have no idea what a joy it is to be able to help you, it’s something we live for. Most people won’t let us help them and they rob us of the blessing.”

woman-at-the-wellI still roll that around in my head, especially as I was re-reading the story of the woman at the well this morning and my good friend, Matthew Henry pointed out the humility of Christ asking a, “Samaritan Women” for a drink. Jesus gives us the blessing of helping, can I share that blessing by asking for help and not rob others. Pride, Jesus help me kill that beast.

I never really thought about it that way. It’s easy to give help; it’s not so easy to swallow your pride and ask for it.

The Parable of PRIDE: Men as a group have trouble asking for help. We tend to see life a series of problems to be solved. If we ask for help, it is somehow a negative reflection on our ability to be independent, macho, and self sufficient. Women are far better at asking for help because, as a group, women tend to see life a series of relationships. It comes natural for them to ask for help because it has become part of the way they embrace the mystery of life. So guys (including me!)… the parable for PRIDE is: Prayer – Reduces – Internal – Desire – for Ego
