lost-driver1I can’t help but think of my first date with my wife of 21 years, Tammy. It was a blind date and at the time I lived in Greensboro, NC. Tammy lived outside of Raleigh, NC. She had been selling cars at a Dealership where my best friend worked and he set us up to go on a double date with him and his wife to the “The Comedy Club”, there in Raleigh.

I found her apartment easy enough; when I got to her door I herd a dog barking, sounded like a Doberman, (turned out to be Fred a dachshund).

She opened the door standing on a Chair. She had herd I am 6’5” and she is 5 foot even. Needless to say I was kinda blown away by the whole scene. After I helped her down from the chair, off we went to the comedy club.

I was impressed by her creativity with the whole chair thing, but when she ordered a steak for dinner, I thought, “This could be the one”. A woman who doesn’t eat salad won’t be nagging me to eat it as a meal. Previous dates with “Tofu eaters” had taught me this could be an issue.

We had a good time, but first date jitters didn’t allow us the freedom to really get to know each other. Then came the ride home.

Although I am usually very good with directions, (or so I think, Tammy may disagree) this time I got totally lost. There was at the time an inner and outer beltline around Raleigh. So it turned out it was a good thing I had plenty of gas because we made four loops around Raleigh that night, as I recall. Tammy is from Texas and she had not lived there long and this was only my second trip to Raleigh.

Round and round we went, talking and laughing the whole time and at the end of this merry go round date we had created quite a bond. For the next two months I drove to Raleigh about every other night and within 45 days we were engaged.

There is no doubt in my mind that God may not have stopped the sun from going down to give me more time to win her affections. He was OK with me being lost long enough to get it done. God also knew it would be Tammy, which would NOT let me marry her without going to church. Those trips to church were when I was totally lost in a spiritual way, God used those to woo me closer to Him. Then with Tammy’s help, God showed me “THE WAY”, as I found my need for believing that Jesus died for me.
