you are so right - about not knowing a person's whole story. I think many people including me in this generation have forgotten that car payments should be the exception rather than the rule. I've never had or not even familiar with the above situation but I've never had an expensive car nor a car payment for years.

I thought about your list ... Read Morefor a few days and couldn't think of anything to add. The only otherthing that I could think of is perhaps under safety on your list - "peace of mind" when on the road. Then you posted that video of (can't remember her name now) the 80 yr old lady that drove 3000 miles alone in her 40 yr old car and remined me if you know your car, keep it maintained, carry a cell phone, that is not an excuse either.
oh and carry a gun just in case. :)

Irene, I’m afraid I agree with Marcia. Although, I do think it’s hard to speak when you don’t know the whole story. There are cars that have been so mistreated with bad driving and abused by neglect that to completely repair them is more expensive than finding a dependable used car.

The Trap, and I do mean the trap is the car payments. Many folks can barely afford their car payments. That’s when a huge repair bill comes at them, they panic, and walk into a bigger Trap. They head for the new car dealer who will gladly sell them a new one and roll the negative equity from the old one into the new loan, and the bait in this trap, “You won’t have payment for 45 days”! Snap, the trap is shut and now they have 72 more payments and negative equity from the 50 to sixty percent depreciation in the first year of that new car will add another $10,000 on average to the hole they now find themselves in.

Had they gone out and gotten a small loan to repair their car, or maintain it. In a couple years…”FREEDOM FROM CAR PAYMENT SLAVERY”.

Why has it been out of commission for so long - can only think of two reasons - bad mechanic, not enough money to repair it? I can understand both but.. Irene, are you talking about monthly car payment? Almost any repair is cheaper than buying a new car - including replacing an engine.
