230 MPG/ Will the Chevy Volt Change The Automotive Landscape
At first glance, first year production estimates of 10,000 of the new Chevrolet Volt (beginning November 2010); most would think it a drop in the bucket and a waste of money. When you consider the 1965 Chevy Impala sold over one million a year and the 2007 Toyota Camry 473,000, ten thousand doesn’t even make a good months sales. However, this may be something if driven, (pun intended) in the right direction that could put GM back in the driver’s seat.
Forty cents a day to charge your batteries, with a range of 40 miles after a 6.5 hour charge, 78% of Americans would not being needing any gas. It is a good looking car, seats four, with 161 horsepower and 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. The $10,000 lithium ion batteries are estimated to last 10 years. A total range of 300 miles per charge would probably mean renting a car for vacation but we have come a long way baby from the EV1.
So what does GM need to do to make it sell? Simple, make it affordable. The good news is that as these technologies gain more production it drives down cost, but currently the estimated price is 40K. The determining factor for the long term viability of GM will be if they will embrace the concept of helping their customers get out of debt and provide affordable transportation for the masses, like they did with 1965 Chevy Impala, (price new $3,672), or the 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that sold 460,000 units that year sticker price $6,695. There is still hope. Pray the Lord will guide GM back to where it loves their neighbor as themselves.

The acronym for the parable CHEVY VOLT: The greatest power source in the universe demonstrated His love for us when “Christ – Himself – Embodied – our Victory – by Yielding – and Volunteering – to be Our – Lamb – before the Throne
Dr. Sonny…great to have your acro-insight, I’ve missed your insight since my short attempt at flight.
Never attempt any activity that could cause you to move faster than your Guardian Angel can fly!!
Why would someone want to buy a car like the Volt, if in 10 years, they have to spend another $10,000 for new batteries? And what if the batteries fail after say, only 5 years?
The agan, there is the environmental impact of the disposal of the batteries in the first place. Some will be totaled, and what to do with the technologies and how to dispose.
