The Devil is in the Details

framemachineJust like being sold a car with a “Just a Little” bit of frame damage the devil is certainly in the details in the book of Job.

Now I don’t know how many times I’ve read the 2nd chapter of the book of Job. But if you’re like me you tend to skip over the little details such as when you read this verse.

Job 2: 11” Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place–Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him.”

The point that Eliphaz was a Temanite, or that Bildad was Shuhite, or Zophar was a Naamathite, well that just went right on over my head without another thought. Then God with Matthew Henry’s help knew just the right time to spring it on me. Who  are these guys.

Being troubled by a seemingly unrelated issue, once I understood who these three comforters were, the light came on and all I could do was sit back and worship.

Matthew Henry’s Commentary points out that these comforters must have thought long and hard what they were going to say having sat there for a week before anyone said anything. Then add to that who they were, they were Abrahams Grand Kids.

Gen 36:10-11 These [are] the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau. And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho?, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

Gen 25: 2-3 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name [was] Keturah. And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

So having had a grand father with such faith, surely they had an understanding of why Job had to suffer losing all his wealth and 10 children.  With such a pedigree they would have it all figured out…. NOT.

God chewed them out big time

Job 42: 7 After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.

So just because we are all Abrahams kids,(Gal 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. or “Father Abraham had many sons”),we don’t have to have everything figured out.

Don’t skip the details. In this case as I sat back and thought how cool is it that a little detail made all the difference in understanding about thirty chapters of Job’s friends spouting off advice and wondering how these guys thought they knew anything about God, when my problem was  I didn’t know who there Grand Dad was.

All I could do is worship God, and say thank you for clearing that up for me. Most importantly understanding that I don’t have to understand everything.

Isiah 55: 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

So if one of Abraham’s kids, (commonly know as the church) comes off acting like they have all your problems figured out…Good News, Dad’s gonna straighten them out.

What we can know and it’s so simple everyone can understand with the help of the Holy Spirit. It’s what is written in the Bible and.

John 3:16″For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, [fn] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Remember Father Abraham had many sons, many sons had father Abraham, I am one of them and so are you, so let’s Just Praise the Lord, not try to explain what only God Knows.
