Forrest Jehlik

Research Engineer – Center for Transportation Research

Forrest Jehlik is currently an engineer in the Vehicle Systems section of the Center for Transportation Research (CTR).  He performs the bench-marking of a large range of advanced technology vehicles to support research at CTR’s Advanced Powertrain Research Facility (APRF). This includes plug-in hybrid vehicle and sustainable fuel technologies.

Mr. Jehlik joined Argonne in 2005 as the lead technical coordinator for Challenge X, the country’s premier advanced vehicle technology competition (AVTC) managed by CTR staff.  Forrest provided his technical leadership and expertise to this program by establishing a technology objective, creating competition rules, operational and safety procedures, and assuming the lead for the competitive inter-collegiate vehicle engineering events.

Previous to joining Argonne, Mr. Jehlik was employed at General Motors Research & Development/Powertrain in Detroit, MI from January 2001 – July 2005.  Forrest was the lead combustion engineer on a 10 member team that developed a proprietary combustion system.  The results of this work led to the production of a 4.5L Duramax engine to be available in model year 2010 vehicles

Any race car driver can tell you what happens in a race when your winning and decided to take it easy, play it safe, in other words quit while your ahead. That’s a proverb from the world, “quit while you’re ahead.”

The Lord laid it on my heart years ago to keep a Journal of my walk with him. In 1996-7 I had some spiritual victories, a miraculous healing from lymphoma right after my last Chemo treatment; being crushed between two Jeeps, nearly severing my left leg. These tests added to my testimony and I came out of, “some spiritual cocoons” as Del Takett says. Encouraging daily entries covered my journal as the Lord was with me every step.

Then I slacked off. You can see it in the lack of entries in my journal during the period around 1999. I didn’t get up to read the Bible, spend time in prayer or write in the Journal.

Would you be surprised to know that in early 2000 I started having paralyzing headaches? Some kind of inflammation of the ménages of my brain, concerns about returning lymphoma lead to some brain surgery, which then led to a growing staff infection in my brain. This is repeated twice in Proverbs in 6:10-11 and 24:33-34

“A little sleep, a little slumber,
 A little folding of the hands to sleep—
 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
 And your need like an armed man”.

Lying there dying of a brain abscess in the hospital, I had a need like that described in the repeated Proverb. Talk about you’re immediate repentance! You can see it revealed in several entries daily in my Journal.

Another illustration of the need, I see every time I open my favorite Bible. I used a red pen while I was in the hospital to mark passages that were important to me during that time; they bleed all over the Psalms as my desperate need for fellowship with God during that period always reminds me. Don’t quit while you’re ahead.

God has many times illustrated that it appears to anger Him when He clears the way for victory and we stop short of where we should have gone.

In 2^nd Kings Chapter 13, Jehoash, king of Israel, ran to Elisha over the Armenians problem.

Elisha ordered the king: “Get some arrows.” So the king did. Elisha then told him, “Strike the ground.” And the king struck the ground three times. Then he stopped.

The man of God was angry with him. He said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times, then you would have won the war over Aram. You would have completely destroyed them. But now you will win only three battles over them.”

Don’t quit while you’re ahead.

The Question becomes: How much faith and how much zeal for the Lord do you have?

I love Ecclesiastes 8:8 “No one is let out of the army in times of war.  And evil won’t let go of those who practice it.”

Are we in a time of War?
