Forrest Jehlik

Research Engineer – Center for Transportation Research

Forrest Jehlik is currently an engineer in the Vehicle Systems section of the Center for Transportation Research (CTR).  He performs the bench-marking of a large range of advanced technology vehicles to support research at CTR’s Advanced Powertrain Research Facility (APRF). This includes plug-in hybrid vehicle and sustainable fuel technologies.

Mr. Jehlik joined Argonne in 2005 as the lead technical coordinator for Challenge X, the country’s premier advanced vehicle technology competition (AVTC) managed by CTR staff.  Forrest provided his technical leadership and expertise to this program by establishing a technology objective, creating competition rules, operational and safety procedures, and assuming the lead for the competitive inter-collegiate vehicle engineering events.

Previous to joining Argonne, Mr. Jehlik was employed at General Motors Research & Development/Powertrain in Detroit, MI from January 2001 – July 2005.  Forrest was the lead combustion engineer on a 10 member team that developed a proprietary combustion system.  The results of this work led to the production of a 4.5L Duramax engine to be available in model year 2010 vehicles

          The Automotive dealer franchise system came under attack with the advent of “wind down” letters sent to over 2,000 GM and Chrysler dealers this past Spring.  Any contract is only as good as the trust between the parties.  For nearly one hundred years, manufacturers have entrusted dealers as the retail outlet for their products.  Dealers have made huge investments to fulfill their duties in the sale and servicing of the manufacturer’s product.  They have trusted the validity of their Sales and Service Agreement.  If that were not the case, there would have been no incentive to invest millions in facilities, equipment, inventories and people.  That trust factor was seriously eroded by the actions of Chrysler and General Motors as they stripped the dealers they didn’t want out of their retail network with the help of the President’s men and a unilateral bankruptcy court.

          The livelihood of well over 100,000 people employed in these dealerships was destroyed in a single action.  Dealers lost their investment and in many cases their family business.  Federal, state, county and city coffers were all affected by the loss of tax revenues.  Communities lost the support and contribution of generous dealers throughout the USA and the poor customer now has to drive to a new service location, often several miles away.

          Many dealers who have shut down, gone broke, sold equipment, laid off employees will never recover their losses.  It’s like trying to put Humpty Dumpty back on the wall.

          As we sit here today, the US Congress has passed a Bill, which is awaiting the President’s signature, that will give each of the dealers who were issued wind down letters the knowledge as to why they were chosen to be terminated (knowledge that none of them have now) and an opportunity for the restoration of their Sales & Service Agreement through an arbitration process.

          Of course, not all dealers will be restored, but those who feel they are qualified to be restored will have to begin preparations NOW since the time table is narrowly focused.  If the President signs this Bill, it is enacted into law on that date.  (We are estimating that will occur on or before December 18^th) The manufacturers have 30 days to send each of these dealers the specific reasons for termination.  Within 40 days of the enactment of the law, each dealer must decide if they want to go to arbitration.  They then must be prepared for arbitration, and such arbitrations in most instances must occur within 180 days from the time the Bill is enacted.

          MPG, Inc. has put all the processes in place to help dealers make an intelligent decision as to whether to proceed with arbitration.  For those dealers who utilize MPG’s services, a panel of 3 experts with assistance from automotive dealer-oriented attorneys, will render an opinion as to whether or not arbitration may be favorable.  A template has been developed to gather pertinent information prior to a rejected dealer’s 30-day letter.  We are indeed hopeful that we can serve dealers who deserve to retain their franchises.

Spending another 2 Billion of Tax payer money we don’t have to help further American debt, strengthen Detroit’s competitors, (putting another  Tax Payer 80 Billion at risk), and horribly depleting the cash reserves of the beleaguered New Car Auto Dealers. It would appear at first glance that these legislators were simply voting for expediency and to get votes. But, after more prayer and reflection I believe the deceiver, (Ephesians 6:12, not The President) has some good folks way off base and with our health care the next on his agenda we desperately need prayer for this congress.

Ephesians 6:12  “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

So I printed out the roll calls for both branches and how they voted so we could each take time and pray one by one for God to strengthen and enlighten those courageous legislators who stood up against this bill that so clearly over steps God’s plan for government’s role. I think it is also very important to pray for those who have been deceived that God would open the eyes to the Truth

I believe that this vote clearly shows us which legislators are being deceived or are voting out of pure ignorance.

Interesting; I just did interviews on these Fox radio stations throughout this morning KNST Tucson, AZ, WSYR Syracuse, NY, WOOD Grand Rapids, MI, WKBN Youngstown, OH, WHAS Louisville, KY KCMO Kansas City, MO, KTRH Houston, TX, WDUN Gainesville, GA, WNRP Pensacola, FL. All the hosts had the same questions; how can Fiat save Chrysler, and

Conventional wisdom seems to be lacking in the recent solutions coming out of Detroit and Washington and it appears to me that all America is asking the same questions. I say GOOD! You can’t get any answers if you don’t ask questions. I’m sure all would agree, even those at the head of Chrysler and the Obama administration. We do need answers.

How will Chrysler get the wisdom to pull this thing off is the question I hope they ask. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” James 1:5-6

Is there hope for Chrysler? Count on it. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28. God wins in the end and if God wins we all win.

Chrysler and GM just need to get down to the basics, look to the right Savior, not money, not government, not themselves, none of those are capable of straightening out these problems. Then love your customers enough to provide affordable, heart stopping great products. If those sounded like the two greatest commandments, Love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and all your mind and your neighbor as yourself…..what can I say I trust the source.

 The CCG News Service has unearthed the new designs for these Emissions free, Green, Labor and Fuel Friendly 2010 sedans as proposed by GM (Government Motors). Head designer, Fredrick W. Tone, who currently resides in Flint, Michigan, Flint’s Tone was quoted as saying “this design harkens back to earlier design fundamentals and supplies everything that the ‘corporate and government heads’ believe are needed by the 21^st century American automobile buyer. This ‘new’ design comes after much study into the American driving habits. While supplying all the luxuries expected (Power brakes, AC, heater, music or talk radio) it also controls the drivers carbon footprint. Jack-rabbit (gas waster) starts and hydro-carbons produced by the internal combustion engine will be eliminated.” At the same time applying the now trendy retro styling American’s crave.

While resisting comment, this reporter anxiously awaits what new designs forth coming from the design engineers at Government Motors. Meanwhile rumors are flying out of the Rubble at Chrysler that designer “Barney” has some great new concepts along the same lines.

Dismissing Three hundred and sixty protests, including some from the States themselves, to the Chrysler Bankruptcy May 20th, Judge Gonzales would appear has one thing in mind, “the ends justify the means”. This is the striping of 789 Chrysler Dealers of their contractual rights without even a hearing or due process, trumping state franchise laws without a second thought. The lien holders on Chrysler property protests dismissed. The State of Indiana’s protests were dismissed within hours.

I ask you is this virtue? Is it immoral? For the government to seize a dealers franchise and give it to another or take it all away without so much as a hearing or restitution? Based on Patrick Henry’s conviction we are now far from invincible. Is it moral to take Chryslers Assets and give them to a foreign company and the Labor Unions and the treasury department when the government is the plaintiff and the Judge and the Jury?

Unfortunately the tax payers are far from aware of the other shenanigans going on. How about this, government sponsored floor plans for the remaining dealers, “SBA 15-month test flooring guarantees for Dealers”.

Tax payer money to back bankrupt Chrysler and GM cars that will depreciate by the billions per day is that what your congressman voted for? No, the government will stand to lose billions with what balance of power?

The insanity of the Tax for guzzlers bill I discussed a couple of weeks ago, “PROPOSED CASH-FOR-GUZZLERS WILL BE MORE TAX PAYER CASH DOWN THE DRAIN”

Let me say simply, you can’t fix a car company by firing their outlets. You can’t fix a car company by pouring tax money at them. You can’t fix a car company by going bankrupt and giving their assets to unions or the treasury department or an Italian car company that has never succeeded in the US. You can’t fix a car company by tax payers backing floor plans. You can’t fix a car company by giving customers billions to buy their non competitive cars.

The way you fix a car company is to build cars that Americans want and that they can afford with out putting Americans in slavery to debt.

Democratic lawmakers have proposed a cash-for-guzzlers bill that would provide vouchers of up to $4,500 to people who trade in cars and trucks for new, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The program, if approved by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama, would lead to about one million new-vehicle purchases, according to Michigan Democrat Congressman John Dingell.

Customers would get a $3,500 voucher if they trade in a car that gets less than 18 mpg for a new car with mileage of at least 22 mpg. Vouchers of $4,500 would be awarded if the new car gets at least 10 mpg more than the old, the statement said.

It is ludicrous to pour in more money after bad, putting taxpayers further in debt to bail out companies with money we don’t have for auto manufacturers that cannot succeed without a product that Americans need or want—and with no current plans to build one!”

With Chrysler filing for bankruptcy, Chrysler simply won’t be competitive nor will GM for that matter in competing for this cash because they have their own incentive problems in Bankruptcy court and the banks are skittish about loaning money on car loans for possibly bankrupt manufacturers.

With GM and Chrysler closing plants and closing dealerships they can’t compete, not to mention share of voice in the advertising blitz that would soon come to our air waves.

Honda, Toyota and the like can simply drop their own incentives and ride on the US Taxpayer for the next few months! Attempts to reward Detroit’s Failure to meet customer needs and wants for two decades are failing fast and, without a horse waiting in the stable you can’t win a race!

Unfortunately the biggest loser in this would be the average American, who is already $2,500 upside down in his car. Now he sees the Joneses and the Smiths and three other new cars on his street and says to himself, “those guys all used my tax money to buy new cars I gota get me some of that.” He then goes and finances a new car, let’s say a Dodge Avenger sticker price $22,500 with rebates and his new voucher he pays $16,500 add his $2,500 negative equity he finances $19,000. Did he realize he could have bought that same car at the Auction right now for $10,000? With Chrysler’s current situation then add the incoming closed and broke dealer inventory being liquidated and this voucher program you will see auction prices dropping like lead. Now our fellow American is $9,000 upside down and he won’t be able to trade for four more years. IT”S A TRAP!!!!!!!!! Oh did I mention you still have to pay the $4,500 somewhere along the line or your grand children will. Will it save GM and Chrysler no. Will it put some Americans back to work, probably for a short time? The answer still needs to be a better product. Getting off the Rebate Juice has proved impossible for Detroit and may prove impossible for Federal Motors. All this is way too insane for me to really express the mess it causes. More Federal warranty claims down the road for the President’s warranty program, with dealers closing who knows how these warranty claims will be processed.

Why do the President and the Congress think they know something about the car business? This is a test America, who will be your Savior? The Government can not save us! We can get on our knees now and pray for wisdom.

Tomorrow is the National day of Prayer and I know we need divine intervention to turn this congress and this President from enslaving the American people with debt both nationally and personally.
