Spending another 2 Billion of Tax payer money we don’t have to help further American debt, strengthen Detroit’s competitors, (putting another  Tax Payer 80 Billion at risk), and horribly depleting the cash reserves of the beleaguered New Car Auto Dealers. It would appear at first glance that these legislators were simply voting for expediency and to get votes. But, after more prayer and reflection I believe the deceiver, (Ephesians 6:12, not The President) has some good folks way off base and with our health care the next on his agenda we desperately need prayer for this congress.

Ephesians 6:12  “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

So I printed out the roll calls for both branches and how they voted so we could each take time and pray one by one for God to strengthen and enlighten those courageous legislators who stood up against this bill that so clearly over steps God’s plan for government’s role. I think it is also very important to pray for those who have been deceived that God would open the eyes to the Truth

I believe that this vote clearly shows us which legislators are being deceived or are voting out of pure ignorance.

Please be in prayer this weekend for Bankruptcy Judge Arthur Gonzales. He has now said he will issue his opinion on the proposed sales of Chryslers Assets to Fiat on Monday. 781 Dealers Franchises could be seized by the government, Bond Holders Assets, thousands of employees, suppliers all hang in the balance.  There are 360 protests and Judge Gonzales has to decide does he uphold the law, truth and justice, or do the ends justify the means and the need for a quick bankruptcy not allow for these issues to be resolved in detail. Decisions we all face every day do we do it quick or do we do it right…..What would Jesus have us do…..read these verses below and clearly we need to pray.

The people at General Motors need our prayers as well. Their bankruptcy looms Monday as well.

Luke 18

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

 1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

 4″For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!’ ”

 6And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

“Hello Darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again” I loved that song, The Sound Of Silence sung by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle. This morning I was intrigued by the 88 Psalm and as I considered that last verse.

“You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.” NIV

As I read it this morning in the NIV, I thought, “oh boy do I know how that feels.” Times like that when you crave sleep just to stop the pain, either physical or emotional, “been there done that, have the hospital gown, and the tear towel.”

I couldn’t help but think of Paul Simon penning those words, “Hello darkness my old friend. The word translated in the NIV closest friend is quite a bit deeper than that in the Hebrew “yada`” is the same word used first in the Bible in Genesis 3:5 where it says knowing.

“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Then in the next chapter 4:1

“Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.”

This “yada`” is a very intimate word and the author Heman had certainly become very acquainted with these “Dark or secret Places” mentioned in this last verse.

This 88 Psalm truly left me with more questions than answers, and that’s what I love about the word of God I can ponder it forever. Who was Heman, (the author), was he Samuel’s Grandson, Hannah’s great grandson mentioned in 1Chronicals 6:33 that David appointed lead singer in His Amazing Worship Group? If so, we know his father had grieved God and David’s buddy Samuel doing evil and had been stripped of his Judgeship, and maybe that lead to the psalmist’s troubles.

Why doesn’t this Psalm have a happy ending? Or maybe it does? Is it a pre-figure of Christ as some suppose with Him facing death and the Pit and troubled as Jesus was in John 13?

After a great deal of pain and death with more to come, the turning point seems to be in the 13^th and 14th verse.

“But to You I have cried out, O LORD, And in the morning my prayer comes before You. LORD, why do You cast off my soul? [Why] do You hide Your face from me?”

 I have to admit I dearly love this “BUT” he is still crying out still seeking the face of God. Oh God may my faith hold on this tight as I become all to intimate with the dark places. May I too see Your Face…Selah (think about it).

Bankruptcy = Money stops! Plants shut down: jobs lost, cars stop flowing, spelling more trouble for dealers, more jobs lost, suppliers, more jobs lost, and banks wondering “What’s the loan value of GM and Chrysler cars”. All this creates rolling toxic assets as the value of everyone’s vehicles hangs in the balance

2600 GM dealers leaving and untold Chrysler Dealers leaving will cause a huge amount of inventory going to the auctions for sale, lowering the value of all cars. Sit tight it’s going to be a wild ride. Real estate on all these dealer properties going on the market, missing tax revenues from all the employees and all the car sales Right now there are certainly more questions than answers…… Where do you TURN?

As a father, one of my favorite calls that will forever tell me that my relationship with my son has at least a footing, that was when he put his Jeep in the ditch. He was sixteen at the time and had just started driving it was a rainy day. I got a call, it was my son, “Dad I just drove off the road my car is in the ditch up against a tree, what I do?” Wow tough call, “are you alright son?” He was, thank you, thank you, thank you for calling me! When you love someone and they’re in trouble you are desperate to help. Oh how God’s heart is blessed when we call him when we’ve put the car in the ditch. ASK HIM, “Dad what do I do?” He will NEVER let you down, you may think he did but later you will understand.

James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given him.

NIV 1 Chronicles 4:10 Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain. And God granted his request.

This morning my study took me to 1 Chronicles 4 and there I found the prayer of Jabez amongst the genealogies. I read Matthew Henry’s commentary on it, and he took special note that Jabez’s mother named him pain, and then I noticed that in the NIV translation his prayer is to be free from pain translated evil in the King James Version. I have found in past study that when you find words translated different ways many times you’ll find a deep concept worth chewing on. The word in question in Hebrew is ra` definition: bad, unpleasant, evil (giving pain, unhappiness, misery).

As God worked with me on that, (and He still is), I thought of the many times my sin has grieved God. It really helps me to understand the prayer, and I lift up my own plea, “God guide me in a right path that I wouldn’t sin and cause You pain.  As a father I understand how some times my kids are a pain, but more than that how it pains me to see them take the bait of sin and knowing the consequences in my heart causes me great pain. Again I feel a very small taste of God’s pain and worship knowing He loves me and my kids more than I could ever fathom and if I feel that kind of pain when my kids sin, oh God, help me to stay focused on Jesus that I may not cause You that pain and that I may guide my family to do the same.

I have never read the book The Prayer of Jabez, perhaps it says all that, but I sure enjoyed discovering it for myself. That’s why I so dearly love my daily time with the Lord. Treat yourself to that time tomorrow it’s sooooo worth it.

Any race car driver can tell you what happens in a race when your winning and decided to take it easy, play it safe, in other words quit while your ahead. That’s a proverb from the world, “quit while you’re ahead.”

The Lord laid it on my heart years ago to keep a Journal of my walk with him. In 1996-7 I had some spiritual victories, a miraculous healing from lymphoma right after my last Chemo treatment; being crushed between two Jeeps, nearly severing my left leg. These tests added to my testimony and I came out of, “some spiritual cocoons” as Del Takett says. Encouraging daily entries covered my journal as the Lord was with me every step.

Then I slacked off. You can see it in the lack of entries in my journal during the period around 1999. I didn’t get up to read the Bible, spend time in prayer or write in the Journal.

Would you be surprised to know that in early 2000 I started having paralyzing headaches? Some kind of inflammation of the ménages of my brain, concerns about returning lymphoma lead to some brain surgery, which then led to a growing staff infection in my brain. This is repeated twice in Proverbs in 6:10-11 and 24:33-34

“A little sleep, a little slumber,
 A little folding of the hands to sleep—
 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
 And your need like an armed man”.

Lying there dying of a brain abscess in the hospital, I had a need like that described in the repeated Proverb. Talk about you’re immediate repentance! You can see it revealed in several entries daily in my Journal.

Another illustration of the need, I see every time I open my favorite Bible. I used a red pen while I was in the hospital to mark passages that were important to me during that time; they bleed all over the Psalms as my desperate need for fellowship with God during that period always reminds me. Don’t quit while you’re ahead.

God has many times illustrated that it appears to anger Him when He clears the way for victory and we stop short of where we should have gone.

In 2^nd Kings Chapter 13, Jehoash, king of Israel, ran to Elisha over the Armenians problem.

Elisha ordered the king: “Get some arrows.” So the king did. Elisha then told him, “Strike the ground.” And the king struck the ground three times. Then he stopped.

The man of God was angry with him. He said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times, then you would have won the war over Aram. You would have completely destroyed them. But now you will win only three battles over them.”

Don’t quit while you’re ahead.

The Question becomes: How much faith and how much zeal for the Lord do you have?

I love Ecclesiastes 8:8 “No one is let out of the army in times of war.  And evil won’t let go of those who practice it.”

Are we in a time of War?

When I watched this video

 I could see it in the eyes of the engineers that they had it right. They had been re-thinking everything with a clear vision of building a car their countrymen could afford.

.GM, Ford, Chrysler are you listening? Tata is  putting their countrymen to work building cars for the world, don’t stand back and laugh like you did at VW and Honda when they came to this country.

Let us all pray that God will raise up someone in Detroit that will scrap the old way and seize this exciting time to raise up another great American car company, one that builds cars for the masses.

Ah, the age old question. One thing I would like to emphasize is how important this question is. Not only is your second biggest investment at stake but your safety as well. As in most fields you have both issues of Character and Competence. On the competence side one lesson I learned from Volkswagen I have never forgotten. You see when the original beetle first came out the valves needed to be manually adjusted in order for the engine to run at optimal performance. Originally Volkswagen recommended this every three thousand miles and if done properly would improve performance fuel economy etc… The problem arose when they found they were having catastrophic engine failure in one of four vehicles that had this service performed. The reason was the mechanics were incorrectly adjusting the valves which caused the little air cooled babies to self destruct. So they sent out the training teams to educate their dealer service technicians on how to properly adjust the valves. After months of training they had no change in the number of engine failures. So they changed their strategy and sent out bulletins changing the service interval for adjusting the valves to every six thousand miles and guess what, their catastrophic engine failures were cut in half. You can guess what they did next, yes changed it to twelve thousand miles and were not surprised when they quit replacing engines under the warranty period. Volkswagen learned and taught me that the more you can keep your hood shut, the better off you are. In other words, “if it aint broke don’t fix it”. 

#1 Prayer

Don’t wait till something blows up before you pray. God, being not unlike a good earthly father, loves to hear from you and wants to help. One of the best ideas I have ever heard was to share this prayer request with your Sunday School Class. Not only do you get the whole class agreeing with you and God that you need a good  Dealership/ Mechanic or Shop to work with, but many times the Lord will lay it on the heart of one of the members who that Dealership/Mechanic or Shop should be and they come and share it with you.

#2 Ask A Parts Person

Parts people see the results of a good mechanic or a bad one because they see the parts they return and can tell whether they’re guessing or not. Great mechanics come to the parts counter like the nurses know a great surgeon, (nurse I need six cc’s of methyl triglyceride Stat!!) no question they know what they are doing, so just like the nurses know the great doctors, parts people know the great mechanics. So go to the dealership parts department and ask who has been on the parts counter the longest, then ask him or her who is the best mechanic on the type of vehicle you have. A great diesel mechanic is not usually also the best on small cars. Dealerships tend to have the best talent because they provide the best training, benefits and the most money. I’m telling you how to get the best not the cheapest. Training is a big factor because, “if you think education is expensive, try ignorance”

The same strategy works for finding an independent mechanic. Go to a parts store that caters to mechanics wholesale usually NAPA or CarQuest, not AutoZone or someplace like that that sells retail. Again, ask for the person who has been there the longest and then ask them who the best mechanic in the area is for the type of vehicle you have. Once again the parts guy has dealt with all of them and the parts person knows who knows what he is doing.

Dr. David E. Cole is the Chairman of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was formerly Director of the Office for the Study of Automotive Transportation (OSAT) at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. He has worked extensively on internal combustion engines, vehicle design, and overall automotive industry trends. Dr. Cole received his B.S.M.E., M.S.M.E., and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
