Pot Hole

In William Gurnall’s Classic “The Christian in Complete Armor” when looking at this verse Ephesians 6:13 mentioning the evil day, William poses the obvious question that I never thought of. “What is the evil day?” Great question I think and in typical puritan fashion of the 1600’s William goes on into several arguments for a few pages before he tells you what he thinks, I’ll save you the discussion and just give you his point. “It’s the day of your death”, is William’s view. The more I think about it and the more I study the more I love the thought of it.

Years ago one of my favorite people, Miss Beck now 103 years old but at the time she was 90 was working tirelessly to get resident of the Assisted Living home she lived in to come to devotions every morning and to make sure she had someone to minister, (she played the piano). So I asked her why she doesn’t slow down some at her age and she quoted to me Ecclesiastes 8:8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it. She then said once you are enscripted in the Lord’s Army there ain’t no getting out till the wars over. Miss Beck at 103 still understands the war is at hand and we had better have our Armor on. The day of our death especially.

ARE YOU READY FOR THAT DAY? would appear to be the most important question you can ever ask yourself.  Like King David against Goliath this would be no time to have on armor that was too big or that I had never used before. I best be in daily  use of my Belt of Truth, My Breast Plate of Righteousness, my Shield of Faith, My feet fitted with the gospel of peace.  I need to be very used to looking through my Helmet of Salvation and accustom to swinging the Sword of the Spirit, The Very Word of God. Then there is that precious, precious weapon of ALL PRAYER.

Lord help us all to be fitted and ready for that day.
