The Lost Art

Remember the good old days when, somehow, you knew you took a wrong turn a ways back and now you were totally lost and too proud to stop and ask for directions. With smart phones and on board navigation I think those days may be gone forever. So I thought you might enjoy pondering with me some of the things we lose by giving over our brains to Navigation APPS. Here is my list in progress. PLEASE SHARE YOUR IDEAS

  1. A sense of really knowing how to get somewhere
  2. Knowing how to get back
  3. Finding new neighborhoods
  4. That sense of adventure and danger
  5. Opportunities for my wife and kids to see how messed up I really am
  6. A chance to meet gas station attendants
  7. Understanding where you really are
  8. A chance to be totally out of my comfort zone
  9. A great excuse for being late somewhere
  10. That ‘Ted Trueblood’ feeling when you discover your route on your own sense of direction abilities
  11. The ability to read a real map
  12. The chance to take your best guess and find out you were right
  13. The chance to take your best guess and find out you were wrong
  14. The ability to take a good teasing from passengers/mother-in-law
  15. Finding new Stores and Restaurants
  16. Learning to pose like you knew where you were going the whole time (acting ability)

So maybe it’s just me but like calculators take the math out of math, navigation takes a certain something from us…So why not live on the wild side and try getting there the old fashioned way today….
