Nationally traffic fatalities are dropping tremendously from 2005’s 43,510 traffic fatalities to 2013’s 32,850 deaths almost 25%. Why do you think? Naturally there a lots of factors but I believe three keys and some things to consider to this wonderful decrease are:
1. Safer Cars.
a. With all the technology of computer aided design and crash testing the engineering advances in the last 15 years probably exceeded the previous 40 as far as safety.
b. The critical factor I think all drivers need to consider about our cars being safe with all this technology is that all the systems are designed with a restrained driver in mind. Leave your seat belt off and all that technology is out the window, perhaps it even puts you in a worse place.
2. Seat Belt Usage:
a. In 2005 only 80% of us were wearing our seat belts and according to the NHTSA wearing seat belts reduces the chance of injury in a car accident by more than 50%. The more chilling statistic is that 43% of those killed last year in traffic accidents were unrestrained. So to some extent the non seat belt wearing crowd is killing themselves off. (just sayin)
3. Safer Roads:
a. Those little rumble strips to keep us all more alert on our highways these days not only keep folks awake, but just think how many were texting or fumbling with the radio heard that sound and got back on the straight and narrow.
b. This is another place technology gives us computer aided curves and sight obstruction data that have really revolutionized the engineering of road safety.
Yes, no doubt child car seats and their restraint systems and many other new safety technology comes out almost daily all play a factor in our roads being much safer considering traffic is increasing, (it’s even more amazing). Yet safety has both a reality and a feeling that goes much deeper in my view.
